CRB - Biomass Research Centre is a new research centre sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Environment and Territory at the University of Perugia. CRB is the Italian reference Centre for research on biofuels and biomass for energy.

Legislation gives to CRB a key role about certification of biomass energy chains, and in fact it identifies the Biomass Research Centre, near the University of Perugia, as the subject which Network administrator (ex-GRTN today GSE) can avail (Article 11, paragraph 6 of DM 24 October 2005 - OJ No 265 of 14.11.2005) in order to make the verifications needed to green certificates and guarantee of origin acquisition for the production of electricity from biomass plants, including hybrid plants, (Article 6 paragraph 3 DM October 24, 2005 - OJ No 265 of 14.11.2005).

The Centre aims at developing and organising national and local initiatives on the use of biomass for energy purposes. The Centre promotes research and experimentation to optimise biomass production, processing and energy conversion in terms of efficieny, profitability and environment.
Activities are focused on main production chains, from agriculture, forestry and industry to energy, and developing best practice guidelines.

The Centre also aims at:

-

promoting certification of biofuel and bioenergy as well as energy and environmental labelling of products and processes realted to biomass energy production, by means of quality certifications;

-

acting as a support to energy/environment regulatory in order to determine facilitations, permit procedures, law constraints, grants;

-

promoting training in the field of energy driven biomass use;

-

promoting dissemination of information on the environmental benefits of bioenergy.

CRB is the official reference centre on the national level for research on bioenergy with the goal of highlighting and promoting Italian activities in this industry. CRB has in stock a staff which consists of professors, researcher, Phd, from Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Perugia.
