Pilot project - Anaerobic digestion

1MWel Co-generation plant

A demostrative 1 MW electric power and 3 MW thermal cogeneration plant will be built and monitored in central Italy. The plant will be fuelled whit: wood processing waste combined with biomass cultivation on lands that are not suitable for agricultural purposes, such as road and railway surroundings and escarpments. The co-generation system is based on an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC); the purpose is to demostrate the energetic and economic sustainability of the whole production chain.

Anaerobic digestion

A batch-type laboratory anaerobic digester was built at the laboratory facility; it controls and monitors the main process digestion parameters (temperature, PH). The digester is connected to a gasholder allowing to measure biogas production over time. The system is used in order to assess the production and characteristics of biogas obtained from different substrates.

Pilot systems at selected farms in Umbria

  • Use of waste from cattle breeding for biogas production: the resulting biogas is used in a 30kWel gas engine producing electric energy and heat to be used within the process to maintain a constant digester temperature.

  • Use of grapevine trimming waste for wood chip production: wood chip is used in a 400kWth diathermic oil boiler which is partly used for heating and freezing needs through absorbing generating sets.
